In short
utli turns your speech into text on your phone. Recordings, recognized text, your word list and your history stay on the device. I run no server for utli, you need no account, and the app contains no ads, no usage analytics and no crash reporting service.
What the app processes on your device
Microphone
utli records only when you start a recording with the button or in the app, and stops as soon as you end it. The recording stays in memory; utli discards it after recognition and never saves it as a file.
Recognition runs on your device with the speech model you downloaded. If no model is loaded or it returns no text, utli uses Android’s offline speech recognition, which also runs on the device.
Recognized text and history
utli keeps your last ten dictations encrypted in the app’s private storage so you can paste or copy them again. You can delete entries in the app. The app is excluded from Android backup and device transfer.
Word list and replacements
Words and replacement rules you enter stay in the app’s private storage. utli uses them only to improve recognition on your device.
Accessibility service
If you turn it on, utli uses Android’s accessibility service to insert the recognized text into the field where your cursor is. To do that, utli checks whether a text field is selected and whether it is a password field (utli inserts nothing there). While inserting, utli reads the content of that one field to check that the text arrived. utli stores none of this and sends none of it anywhere.
Floating button
utli needs the “Display over other apps” permission only to show the record button.
Downloading the speech models
Recognition needs a speech model (Parakeet or Whisper) that you download once in the app. During the download your device connects to huggingface.co, operated by Hugging Face, Inc. (USA). As with any web request, Hugging Face receives technical data such as your IP address and details of the requesting software (user agent). utli sends no recordings, texts or words with it. The legal basis is Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR: without a model the app cannot provide the function you want to use.
After the download, utli opens no further network connections.

If you install utli from Google Play, Google processes data under its own terms: https://policies.google.com/privacy
This website
Cloudflare, Inc. (USA) serves this page. When you open it, Cloudflare processes technical data such as your IP address and details of your browser to deliver the page and protect it from attacks. The page sets no cookies, loads nothing from other servers and does not count visits. Cloudflare’s privacy policy applies: https://www.cloudflare.com/privacypolicy/
Your rights
Under the GDPR you have the right of access, rectification, erasure, restriction of processing, data portability and objection. Because no data from the app reaches me, I cannot tell you anything about your dictations; all data sits on your device, and you delete it by deleting it in the app or by uninstalling the app. You can lodge a complaint with a data protection supervisory authority, for example the one where you live.
Changes
If the app changes in a way that processes other data, I will update this policy and the date above.
